Welcome!

Welcome to the discussion list for Newfoundland devotees. Along with the obvious uses, such as getting and giving information on health matters, clubs, activities, etc., this list should be used to propagate some of the lore which surrounds Newfoundland dogs, and to pass along experiences and anecdotes (anybody who has been among Newfoundlands much is sure to have plenty of these).

We respectfully ask that the list not be used to market puppies (or anything else, for that matter), or to bash or extol specific breeders (that can be done via private e-mail). Breeder referals are generally best done through the NCA and your local club. The list has been successfully used to facilitate placement of Newfoundland rescue dogs - this is not discouraged.

Margaret Booth Chern, in "The New Complete Newfoundland", advised to always assume a Newfie is capable of something until he proves otherwise. This attitude is taken toward Newfie lovers here in that this list is neither restricted nor moderated. If you wish to unsubscribe to the list, send to listproc@lists.Colorado.EDU with the phrase:

in the *body* of your message.

Sending to the List:

The address for the list is:

newf-l@lists.colorado.edu

Messages sent to this addresss will be distributed to all list subscribers. Do not send unsubscribe or other requests to this address. Listproc requests must be sent to listproc@lists.Colorado.EDU.

List Participation:

Many people are happy to lurk on a list, rarely, if ever, posting messages. Newf-L is a fine list to lurk. On the other hand, what's a mailing list if messages aren't flying by fast and furious? If you plan to be an active participant, please send a brief introduction to the list. No curriculum vitae, just a little about yourself and any dogs who happen to live with you, around you, or in your dreams. It helps to retain our sense of community on the list. (If you are a breader or sell something that may be of particular interest to Newfoundland folks, it's ok to mention that in your intro).

Newf-L Roll Call:

Robin Kinkead (robinki@cyberoptics.com) maintains a list of information on Newf-L subscribers. This roll call list is sent to Newf-L occasionally. To be included, send mail to Robin. A role call list entry looks like:

YOUR NAME, DOG CODE CITY ST COUNTRY
     -----------------------------------------------------------------------
     | Robin Kinkead, Josie B93B Minneapolis MN USA |

     -----------------------------------------------------------------------
EMAIL ADDRESS and URL (on second line)

The complete format is:

Newf-L WWW Page:

Ashley McLure (atlnewf@mindspring.com) maintains a handsome WWW page for the list. It has links to pictures of Newf-L dogs, the Newf-L Roll Call list, entertaining anectdotes shared in Newf-L, and more. The URL is http://www.mindspring.com/~atlnewf/newfl.

Newfoundland FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):

There is a Newf FAQ available which you should probably read before posing questions to the list. It may be obtained via e-mail, ftp or WWW at the following addresses:

ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/newfies

or
send email to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with:
send usenet/news.answers/dogs-faq/breeds/newfies
in the body of the message, leaving the subject line empty.
or
See the Newf-L WWW page (URL is noted above)

Newf-L FAQ:

What is the Newf-FAQ? The Newf-FAQ holds the key to such things as: How to UNSUBSCRIBE, how to get Newf-L in DIGEST form, how to properly use Newf-L, what to post, what not to post, and a whole lot more.

Did I mention there's loads of information of Newfies too? Basically if you have a question, there have probably been many people that have had the same question in the past. The Newf-FAQ is the place to look for an answer before you post your question to the list.

Please note that at this time the Newf-FAQ is a work in progress and should be read as such.

Here's how to view or retrieve the FAQ:

Via the Web (Formatted or Plain Text, Indexed or One Large Document): http://www.gad.net/Newf-FAQ

Via E-Mail (Text Only - One Large Document): send e-mail to newf-faq@gad.net (Any subject, any text) You will receive the entire FAQ (text format) in your INBOX shortly thereafter.

Please note that when sent via e-mail, the Newf-FAQ is not sent as an attachment, but rather as the body of an e-mail message.

If you have any questions or comments about the Newf-FAQ, direct them to lordgad@planet.net.
